Progress on the layout room
Since the last post, I've done, and had done lots of work on the garage. After clearing out all the stuff from the last picture, we were able to discover why the room was so damp, one the floor had rising damp issues, and that water was coming in through the up and over door, and working through the wall that was built behind it. Essentially the door had been sealed with brown parcel tape and the wall behind it had been built of porous cinder blocks!
This all meant that I had to rip out all of the flooring, insulation, and boarding as it was all damp and rotting. After that I got the builders in to remove the cinder block wall, and to brick up the metal door (which fell out and took the corner of the garage with it when we tried to open it!).
Here we are in the middle of doing that.
Once that was done, I still had issues with the damp coming up through the floor. To try and stop that I used Black Jack DPM to tank the walls and floor around the edges. I then used a grey floor paint to try and seal the rest of the floor.
Here we are with that done, renewing the roof insulation and with new lights fitted. these new lights later had to be replaced as they were too tall for the height of the joists.
After this I put up studs on the walls, added Celotex insulation board and with some help put 12mm plasterboard over all that. I then started to mud the plasterboard joints, but whilst doing so, found the rising damp was penetrating the grey floor paint. As a desperate attempt to fix this, I decided to coat the whole floor with the DPM.
Here we are halfway through doing that, with the floor still wet.
Next steps will be:

Next steps will be:
- paint the rest of the floor with DPM
- cover the floor with plastic sheeting as an extra layer (and also to stop rubber feet sticking and lifting the DPM)
- finish the the filling/mudding
- paint the plasterboard
- put down heavy duty rubber matting
- add skirting boards
